Coconut coir basket liners come from the long fibers of the inner husk of coconuts. These fibers mat together to form a durable and natural-looking liner for wire-framed planters. There are two common methods for planting in a coir liner and both can result in an attractive display. Planting properly, whether you grow flowers, foliage plants or herbs, results in healthier plants
Liner Preparation
Basket liners wick moisture out of the soil, causing it to dry more quickly. Soaking the coir liner in warm water for about 30 minutes helps hydrate it prior to planting and slows initial drying, but the basket will still need frequent watering as the coir dries. Alternatively, you can set a plastic liner inside the basket between the coir and the soil. Poke three or four drainage holes in the plastic and fill it with soil. The plastic barrier prevents the coir from wicking out moisture.
Standard Planting
Coir lined planters require planting methods similar to any plant container. The liner may overhang the basket rim once pressed into place, so trimming it down with no more than 1 inch protruding above the frame makes it fit. You can line the coir with plastic sheeting before adding soil, if desired. Once lined, simply fill the basket with soil to within 1 inch of the rim and plant the desired plants inside at the correct depth. The basket requires watering from the top if you use the plastic liner. You can water unlined coir-filled baskets from the top or by setting the basket in a shallow tray of water and allowing it to soak up water from the bottom until the soil surface becomes moist.
Liner Planting
Coir liners allow you to create a hanging orb of plants with a hanging basket, because you can plant directly through the liner. The basket requires preparation similar to that for standard planting, but it won't need a plastic liner, because small slits are cut into the sides and bottom of the coir liner. Once filled, the soil anchors the plant roots slipped through the slits. Planting the top of the basket with additional plants results in a basket that looks full and attractive from every angle.
Coir Tips
The long strands of coir used to make liners are exceptionally durable and sterile, so they don't spread disease to your basket plants and they break down slowly. Unlike moss liners, which can be acidic, coir is pH neutral, so it works with most common container plants. However, the frequent watering necessary in a coir-lined basket does cause nutrients to leech out of the soil quickly. Applying a soluble fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season replenishes these lost nutrients.
